Prue Wright has been involved with the Victorian Wader Study Group - vwsg.org.au -since about 2000. It is a very active group and is primarily focused on the study of migratory shorebirds throughout the Mornington Peninsula and South East Australia. The group uses cannon netting to capture these birds and they all get a metal band and labelled leg flag. In recent years some have geolocators and satellite trackers. All these techniques have provided information on the travel routes, breeding sites and ages of many species of waders that visit the shores in Australia, and have enabled conservation plans to be implemented. Prue has travelled to many interesting places to research these species and has met many interesting people from many parts of the world, who have joined the group on their major effort each year in Broome. Prue says that this has been a wonderful 'retirement' activity, and has filled in the weekends nicely, after spending years driving a 'taxi' transporting her children to sports events! The Victorian Wader Study Group is a wonderful organisation to be involved with and Prue has thoroughly enjoyed being part of it for the last 20 years. The group would like to encourage people to enquire via the website here, if someone is interested in joining or being part of it. ![]() |
